Samsung today showed the world’s smallest 8-megapixel camera module for cellphones. The new module is just 8.3mm (0.32-inch) thick and about 40 percent smaller in volume than existing camera modules. The cube like camera module measure 8.5mm x 8.5mm. Though Samsung has decreased the size of 8-megapixel cellphone camera modules by half, it won’t fit in most of the slim mobile phones like the iPhone available today on the market. This development is an indication that very soon you won’t have to buy a brick if you want a higher megapixel camera phone. Samsung Techwin will start mass production of the sensor very soon and cellphone based on the module should hit the market in Q1 2009.
