Qualcomm’s leaked internal PDF document posted online has revealed their Snapdragon processor roadmap for the coming two years. The three most interesting processors on the roadmap are MSM8960, MSM8930 and MSM8974. These processors are based on Qualcomm’s new ARM CPU core codenamed Krait and next generation Adreno graphics engine.

The first processor to come to the market will be 8960 that will features dual 1.5-1.7GHz Krait core, 2 x 500MHz LPDDR2 RAM, LTE support, 1080p video and Adreno 225 graphics (125million triangle/sec). The MSM8960 will ship by end of this year or in early 2012 and focus on higher end of the mobile market.

The 8930 will be the second Krait based processor and it will ship in Q3 2012. This processor will aim for middle tier of mobile market and come with dual 1.0-1.2Ghz core, 1 x 533MHz LPDDR2 RAM, LTE support, 1080p video and Adreno 305 graphics (80million triangle/sec).

The first quad-core Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm will come in 2013. It will feature 2.0-2.5GHz quad-core, 2 x 667/800MHz LPDDR3 RAM, LTE support, 1080p video at 60fps and Adreno 320 graphics (225million triangle/sec).

As you can see from the roadmap Qualcomm will focus on higher core speed rather than number of cores. This approach is different from NVIDIA’s plan for their Tegra processor lineup where they will introduce quad-core processor by end of this year. It will be interesting to see which approach wins because if software is not designed to run on multiple cores, it will run faster on a dual core processor with 1.5GHz core clock speed than on quad-core processor with 1GHz clock speed.
