Talking to Ina Fried, Microsoft’s Senior Product Manager Greg Sullivan revealed that more than two million Windows Phone 7 devices were shipped by end of December. There are 9 Windows Phone 7 handsets from various manufacturers on the market today, however neither Microsoft nor the carrier partners provided information about individual model sales.

If we just analyze the 2 million number that Microsoft released we can see why their manufacturing or carrier partners are not commenting. In about 3 months Microsoft sold 2 million Windows Phone 7 licenses, which means on average about 220,000 units of each Windows Phone 7 handset model was shipped. Indicating that not even a single model was able to reach one million sales mark in first quarter of sales.

And the statement from LG executive James Choi clearly shows the frustration “From an industry perspective we had a high expectation, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than we expected.”

Two million is a bad number when you consider that total of 9 handset models from makers like Samsung, LG, HTC and Dell shipped on launch.
