The latest data from market research firm Gartner shows that iPhone users downloaded 2.5 billion applications in 2009, whereas other smartphone users just downloaded 16 million apps giving Apple App Store 99.4 percent market share. Overall, mobile application downloads generated $4.2 billion in revenue. Gartner estimates that in 2010 application download will reach 4.5 billion with $6.8 billion in revenue and in 2013 download will cross 21.6 billion with 29.5 billion in revenue.

“As smartphones grow in popularity and application stores become the focus for several players in the value chain, more consumers will experiment with application downloads,” said Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner. “Games remain the No. 1 application, and mobile shopping, social networking, utilities and productivity tools continue to grow and attract increasing amounts of money.”

Apple App Store has dominated 2009, but with rise in sales on Android handsets and launch of online application stores for other smartphone platforms, App Store might lose some market share in 2010. However, if Apple continues App Store growth like last year it will definitely have more than 80 percent market share in 2010.
