Even though, Qualcomm executive called Apple’s A7 64-bit chip a marketing gimmick, the company has just announced that they will be following Apple and will launch a 64-bit chip in 2014. However, Qualcomm will target mid-range smartphones with their new chip rather than higher-end smartphones like Apple did with A7 chip.
The other interesting thing about the new chip is that Qualcomm will directly use ARM’s Cortex A53 CPU core in Snapdragon 410 and not their own custom-made ARM CPU core like they do in there high-end chips. The A53 architecture offers 64-bit ARMv8 instruction set, which Qualcomm’s custom Krait CPU doesn't offer yet.
The Snapdragon 410 will have new Adreno 306 GPU, support for 13-megapixel camera, 1080p video recording and LTE connectivity via MSM9x25 modem and RF360 Front end solution. This would enable smartphone makers to build single phone model compatible with most common LTE bands rather than multi-model approach required by previous generation chips.
Qualcomm will start sampling Snapdragon 410 in Q2 2014 and devices based on the new chip should come to the market in second half of 2014.

Yesterday, we posted BCN’s report that 9 out of top 10 smartphones sold in Japan were iPhones. And today, BCN is reporting that 6 out of top 10 tablets selling in Japan are iPads. The survey was for the month of November.
iPad Air took 1st, 5th, 9th and 10th spot; and iPad mini took 2nd and 8th spot. iPad Retina mini wasn't in top 10 as it shipped in mid-November and Apple had only limited supply. Asus Nexus 7 was the other tablet in top 10 taking 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th spot. But that might change soon as iPad Retina mini is seeing unprecedented demand and reports are that supply of the new iPad Retina minis is improving. It will be interesting to see how tablet sales ranking will change in December.

BCN, a company tracking consumer electronic device sales in Japan reported that iPhone 5s and 5c are in the first nine positions out of top 10 smartphones selling in Japan. Various iPhone 5s models occupied number 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th spots; and iPhone 5c occupied 4th and 8th spots.
The only non-Apple device in top 10 smartphones was Sony Xperia on number 10th. The sells survey was for the month of November and 76.1% of smartphones sold in Japan were iPhones, which was higher than 61.1% average for three months till October. Apple launched the new iPhone 5s and 5c in September and this jump in sales would indicate that the new models are selling well in Japan.
Few weeks back, it was also reported that over 50% of smartphones sold in US were iPhones for the month of October and Samsung Galaxy S4 was a distant third on most US carriers after iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in the smartphone race. [Via Forbes]

Even though Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch with lot of pomp and show three months back and has continued large scale ad campaign for the smartwatch, reports are that they have sold less the 50,000 Galaxy Gears since launch.
Business Korea is reporting, Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy Gear in time for the wearable computing generation. Yet this product has cumulative sales under 50,000, with daily sales of only 800-900 units. These low sales values for the Galaxy Gear are far below the initial expectations of the industry.
It has already been reported that the return rates for Galaxy Gear smartwatch is very high, which would further indicate that the sales are even lower. Also, most reviewers have called the Galaxy Gear incomplete and a beta product.

Garmin today announced two new GPS running watches, which they claim are “the next best things to having a personal running coach.” Forerunner 620 and Forerunner 220 GPS running watches are two of the lightest, thinnest and most advanced offering for runners from Garmin.
The Forerunner 620 offers advanced features like recovery advisor, race predictor and VO2 max estimate to help runners train smarter and achieve new race goals. When used with the NEW HRM-Run monitor, the 620 also provides feedback on running form. For indoor training, like on a treadmill, the 620 and 220's built-in accelerometer tracks distance and pace, so runners don't need a separate sensor. Both models boast Garmin's unique one-inch Chroma color display to easily interpret data.
The Forerunner 620 can measure VO2 max using advanced algorithm to indicate the maximum volume of oxygen a runner can consume per minute, which can help predict a runner’s race time for several distances. With HRM-Run the 620 can also calculate 3 different running metrics including Cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time.
Both Forerunner 620 and 220 support Bluetooth Smart allowing them to transfer data from the watch to Garmin Connect Mobile app on compatible smartphone. Runners can also set up their Forerunner 620 to work with one or more Wi-Fi hot spots, such as their home and office networks, to automatically sync with Garmin Connect when in range.
Forerunner 620 is available in blue/black and white/orange, while Forerunner 220 is available in black/red and white/violet and are expected to ship fall 2013. Forerunner 620 will be priced $399.99 and $449.99 with HRM-Run Bundle. The Forerunner 220 will be priced $249.99 and $299.99 with Heart Rate Bundle. [Via Engadget]
