Everyone has been talking about when iPhone will get 4G LTE, will it be in the upcoming iPhone 5 that will be launched in summer 2012 or the generation after that. However, one thing looks almost certain Windows Phone will get LTE before the iPhone. According to Paul Thurrott of Win Supersite, Microsoft and its Windows Phone partners plan to release a number of LTE devices in first half of 2012 on AT&T. Paul wrote:

The information I have relates to the US market only. These plans will be officially revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month.

Three LTE-based Windows Phone handsets--the Nokia ACE, HTC Radiant, and Samsung Mendel--will ship on AT&T Wireless before the middle of 2012. The ACE is due March 18, 2012.

If Windows Phone partners ship LTE based handsets in first quarter of 2012 they will be using the first generation LTE chips, which Apple has clearly said they won’t use because of design and battery life compromises. Apple is waiting for second-generation LTE chips that are made on 28nm process, will consume half the power and will be half the size of current first generation LTE chips.

Qualcomm and other wireless modem makers have already announced that they will ship second-generation LTE chips by end of Q2 2012, which would mean that initial LTE Windows Phone - Nokia ACE, HTC Radiant and Samsung Mendel would be based on power hungry first gen LTE chips.
