Apple TV Rumors: 32 and 37-inch Size, Samsung Chip, and Customized Channel Lineup

Apple is planning to ship their upcoming TV (now rumored to be named iTV) in the second and third quarter of 2012. They have started working with LCD and chip suppliers including Samsung and Sharp. Sharp will supply the LCD panel for the iTV and according to DigiTimes, Apple will initially focus on 32-inch and 37-inch sizes. However, our sources say that Apple will be focusing on three models ranging from 32-inch to 55-inch (our guess is Apple will go for 37 or 40-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch).

On the chip powering the new iTV, DigiTimes is reporting that Samsung will manufacture a custom chip for Apple. However, DigiTimes also adds “others have suggested that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) have the potential to win orders for Apple's smart TV.” As always Foxconn Electronics will be the assembling partner for the iTV with plans to start production by end of second quarter of 2012.

According to analyst Shaw Wu, iTV customers will be able to choose individual channels and shows they want for a monthly subscription fee. Wu wrote in investors note “This is obviously much more complicated from a licensing standpoint. And in our view, would change the game for television and give AAPL a big leg-up against the competition.”

Shaw Wu has been wrong about Apple related rumors many times before so we should take the ‘customized channel lineup’ news with a big grain of salt. Channel lineup is decided by the cable provider and making deals with all the cable companies around the world will be almost impossible. It will be interesting to see how Apple overcomes this problem if they plan to offer customized channel lineup.
