Android Had Record 3.7 Million Activations This Christmas, But Apple iOS Stole the Christmas Day

Google’s SVP, Andy Rubin today tweeted “UPDATE: There were 3.7M Android devices activated on 12/24 and 12/25.” Indicating that Android had a record breaking Christmas weekend this year. However, even with such good numbers it looks like iOS devices stole the Christmas day from Google.

According to Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt, who analyzed activation data released by Flurry Analytics, which showed 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas day, Apple won the X-mas bake-off. He wrote on Fortune:

If we assume (based on our update) that at least 1.1 million Android devices were activated on Christmas Eve, the number activated on Christmas Day could not exceed 2.6 million.

If we can trust Flurry's and Rubin's numbers, that suggests at least 4.2 million iOS devices were activated on Dec. 25.

The most important thing to look in this data is that Apple won the Christmas day with just three devices iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, whereas even with more than 300 plus devices Google Android was left behind. Christmas sales are an indication of what people want and not what people buy because of cost or other restrictions. Christmas gifts are things that you have asked for or wanted, and an indication of what’s hot this season.
