Unreal Engine 3 from Epic that is behind games like Gears of War 2 and Unreal Tournament has be ported to iPhone platform as a proof of concept by the company. According to Epic, the Unreal Engine port was simply one of the many projects at the company and it shouldn’t be taken as a sign that the company is planning to entry iPhone gaming market. UE3 port only work on latest generation iPhone 3GS and iPod touch devices, as the engine requires ARM Cortex A8 processor and OpenGL ES 2.0 support. The demo video added below shows modified single level UnrealTournament with onscreen controls for navigation and game play working on iPod touch. Mark Rein, VP at Epic said, “Epic isn’t announcing any sort of iPhone engine licenses nor are they entering the iPhone game market. Porting UE3 to the iPhone is simply one of many projects being worked on inside a newer, more svelte and innovative Epic games.” Mark also added that Epic plans to licensee these UE3 ports at some point in the near future. Epic will demo different mobile platforms at CES 2010 in January. However, the company didn’t say whether iPhone would be one of the mobile platforms at CES or not.
