AT&T’s director of next generation services Roger Smith said in a presentation that the company might focus exclusively on Symbian platform. He said that AT&T has grown frustrated with the various smartphone platforms and the carrier might settle on a single, very flexible smartphone OS like the upcoming open-source Symbian OS.
According to Smith, the move to one OS will apply primarily to fully carrier branded devices and smartphones like iPhone and BlackBerry that are third party devices just using AT&T’s voice and data network will not be affected. Smith said that moving to one OS will benefit application development, as the company will focus on one platform only rather than maintaining applications for various smartphone OSs.
