Last week, Asus’s Chairman Jonney Shih announced that Eee PC would grab 30 percent share of notebook market in 2009. Not to be left behind, Acer today said that it aims to capture about 50 percent of netbook market. Acer’s president Giafranco Lanci has said that Acer will take 40 to 50 percent of the netbook market. He estimated total netbook sales would be 30-35 million units in 2009 and out of that Acer will ship 12-15 million netbooks. This year it is believed that Acer will take the number one spot ahead of Asus in netbook market by selling 6 million netbooks.
Basically, if the forecast provided by both the companies come true, the two companies would capture about 80 percent of the netbook market. Leaving companies like HP, Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba and Sony to fight over rest 20 percent. We believe that till now both Asus and Acer had a free ride in notebook market, the competition will increase a lot next year. Both HP and Dell have launched netbook models and Sony is also planning to enter the market next year. The increase in competition will shrink the market share that both Acer and Asus have enjoyed this year.
