Marvell Unveils New E-Reader Platform

Marvell Technology Group, a company known for its mobile phone chipsets, today unveiled a new platform for e-readers. Marvell says that the new platform will allow for a new generation of zippier, lower-cost devices. The company has partnered up with E-ink to create an integrated application processor for e-readers.

Marvell’s platform is based on their new Armada family of processors and will include WiFi, Bluetooth and Cellular connectivity. Marvell’s co-founder, Weili Dai said that the new platform will have entry level price point of $150 only, while offering faster page loads of less than one second.

Device based on the Marvell platform will come to the market next year. The first device based on the new platform will be enTourage Edge, which is a combination e-reader and netbook. Spring Design will ship Alex reader, and an offering from Plastic Logic will also based on the new platform.
