Intel’s New Core i7 Processors Maintain Performance Lead Over AMDSubmitted by lalit on October 5, 2009 - 8:41pm.
Extreme Tech has posted benchmarks for the newest processors from AMD and Intel. The website compared 2.93GHz Core i7-870 (Lynnfield) with 3.4GHz AMD Phenom II X4 965. Extreme Tech also compared performance of new 2.0GHz Core i7-920 mobile processor (codenamed Clarksfield) with the above two processors. The Core i7 870 outperformed AMD Phenom II X4 in every test by vast margin. For example, in Monte Carlo simulation Core i7-870 took just 4.3 seconds compared to 8.7 seconds by AMD. Similarly, in pivot table calculation Core i7-870 completed in 49 seconds versus 93 seconds by Phenom. On large spreadsheet test Core i7 took 63 minutes compared to 89 minutes for Phenom II X4. In fact, the new 2.0GHz Core i7-920 mobile processor also outperformed AMD’s Phenom II X4 965 desktop processor in every test. For instance, the mobile Core i7 processor took 71 minutes to complete large spreadsheet compared to 89 minutes by AMD’s desktop processor. Similarly, in Large Monte Carlo and Pivot Table test also mobile Core i7 was ahead with 6 and 55 seconds it required to complete the respective tests. Though, all three processors showed performance gain when compared to their previous generations, but Intel processors are definitely outperforming AMD processors like they have done for last three years.
