AMD Unveils Radeon HD 5800 Series Graphics Card and New Name Vision TechnologySubmitted by lalit on September 12, 2009 - 2:42pm.
AMD unveiled the new Radeon HD 5800 graphics card series that will start shipping later this year. The new top of the line graphics card can power up to six DisplayPort outputs running at full resolution (2560 x 1600). The card is also capable of merging the six images into one single image as large as 8192 x 8192, if the displays allow it. AMD calls the new technology Eyefinity and it will allow pros and gamers to have panoramic views just like human eyes. AMD will announce Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 later this month. No other information about the new graphics cards was released. Along with the new graphics card series, AMD also announced new name for its PC platform called “Vision Technology”. According to AMD, today consumers aren’t concerned about how fast the processor is or how big the RAM is, they only what to know how capable the computer is. “Today’s consumer cares about what they can do with their PC, not what’s inside,” said Nigel Dessau, CMO of AMD. “They want a rich HD and entertainment experience on their PC, delivered by the combined technology of AMD CPUs and GPUs, without having to understand what gigahertz and gigabytes mean. VISION technology from AMD reflects the maturation of marketing in the PC processing industry and communicates the technology in a more meaningful way.” AMD unveiled notebook platform based on three levels of Vision Technology that includes Vision Basic, Vision Premium and Vision Ultimate. With each increment you get more performance and features. AMD will introduce a fourth level Vision Black in Q1 2010. Notebooks based on Vision Technology will start shipping by end of October. AMD has changed their platform marketing speak, as the company very well know that their mobile processor lineup can’t compete with Intel’s Core 2 Duo lineup on performance. In fact, even AMD’s ATI graphics card paired with Core 2 Duo processor will leave AMD’s platform in dust. And hence the new marketing name “Vision Technology”, which is designed to highlight buzzwords rather than performance. We think competing on price is a better option for AMD than announcing new marketing names.
