Microsoft today announced that Zune HD is now officially available for pre-order on Amazon, Best Buy and Zune.net. The 16GB model will come in black for $219.99 and the 32GB model will come in platinum for $289.99. Both the Zune HD models will ship on September 15th.

Hardware specifications on Zune HD are 3.3-inch (480 x 272) OLED screen, 16GB or 32GB storage, NVIDIA Tegra chip, HD radio and WiFi b/g. The Zune HD will measure 4” x 2” x 0.4”, which is just slightly thicker than iPod touch and it will weigh 2.6 ounces, which is lighter than iPod touch.

Battery life on the player will be 33 hours of music playback and 8.5 hours of video playback when wireless is off. iPod touch offers slightly better battery life for music playback at 36 hours, but it lacks behind Zune HD in video playback at 6 hours. Zune HD will take 2 hours to charge from AC adapter and about 3 hours from USB.

Video is where Zune HD excels with its colorful and bright OLED screen, and 720p video output on HDTV when plugged into optional AV dock. At 720p the player can support 30 fps at maximum 14Mbps bitrate for WMV HD and H.264 video source. Zune HD is available for Pre-order on Amazon with free shipping, and Amazon promises to deliver it on September 15th, if you order it now.
