Toshiba today announced that they have started shipping solid-state drives that use 43nm technology based smaller and denser NAND flash chips. The new NAND chip increases both the capacity and speed of solid state drives. Toshiba is now shipping 2.5-inch SSDs in 512GB, 256GB, 128GB and 64GB capacities. The notebook drives will offer 230MBps read speed and 180MBps write speed. Toshiba is also shipping 1.8-inch SSDs aimed at ultraportable market. The 1.8-inch drives are available in full enclosures as well as in raw unprotected modules. The drives are available in 256GB, 128GB and 64GB capacities, and feature same read and write speeds as the 2.5-inch models. The new SSDs are available now directly to computer builders. No word yet on pricing or when drives will ship directly for consumers.
