Smartbooks is the name given by NVIDIA and Qualcomm to the netbooks based on ARM processors. Many companies including Acer, Foxconn, Pegatron Technology, Compal Electronics and Inventec Appliances are planning to launch smartbooks in fourth quarter this year.

The smartbooks will be based on either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform or NVIDIA’s Tegra platform. As both the platforms are based on ARM architecture they will have lower thermal and energy requirements allowing manufactures to design ultra-thin and light devices.

Acer has developed Google Android based smartbook that they will unveil in fourth quarter. Taiwan based Mobinnova will also begin volume shipments of its 8.9-inch Tegra platform based smartbooks by end of this year. Mobinnova plans to add ultrathin 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch models to its smartbook line in first quarter of 2010. Inventec Appliances will also launch its 10-inch Rainbow smartbook based on Tegra platform in Q4 2009.

The movement behind ARM based netbooks (smartbooks) is getting stronger and it can turn in to a big problem for Intel next year.
