TechUnwrapped has received a tip that some of the images in the Twitter framework of iOS 5 SDK have two times the resolution at 2,048 x 1,536 in comparison to other system image found on iPad 2 which have 1,024 x 768 resolution. TechUnwrapped’s tipster wrote:

As I was going though the iOS SDK I came across some images in the new Twitter .framework. The resolution appears to be 1,536 x 2,048. Apparently the Twitter .framework is the only framework I found to have these enormous image.

TechUnwrapped believes that as the images were only found in the Twitter .framework it is unlikely that iPad 3 will have retina display. But we think that TechUnwrapped is wrong and 9to5mac concurs with our conclusion. They also discovered the same images in the iOS 5 SDK and they believe that the “2x” marker on these images is an indication that next gen iPad will have Retina display. iOS 5 will be the base operating system that the next-generation iPad will support, so it makes sense that we would find iPad 3 graphics in the iOS 5 SDK, not the iOS 4 SDK – in which iPad 2X graphics were previously found. Additionally, the Twitter framework is something only present in 5.0, so next-gen graphics for a planned iPad 3 being found in this SDK would be no surprise.

We have no concrete information about iPad 3 yet, but we think high resolution displays for tablets shown at SID 2011 last month and the higher resolution images found in the iOS SDK are an indication that next generation iPad will have Retina display with 2,048 x 1,536 resolution.
