Apple showcased the new iOS 5 at WWDC keynote yesterday and released iOS 5 beta preview for developers. Within 24 hours developers have gone through the code of iOS 5 and have discovered references to new iPad and iPhone models. TUAW sources, who inspected the USB files of iOS 5 found that “there are declarations buried in the iOS system files that reference "iPad3,1" and "iPad3,2." Likewise, "iPhone4,1" and "iPhone4,2." The iPhone 5 will be a 4th generation unit because the iPhone 3G was technically 1st generation.”

Reference to iPad3,1 and iPad3,2 is new and indicates that Apple is already working on next generation model, but reference to iPhone 4,1 and iPhone 4,2 is not new and was first see in iOS 4.3 release in January. Apple normally adds reference to a new hardware about 4-6 months before it’s ready to ship, which would mean that there is a possibility that we will see iPad 3 before end of this year as has been rumored for past few months.

As for the iPhone 5, we are very sure that it’s coming this summer and it will be announced before the rumored September time frame.
