Next Gen iPhone to get Radio Tagging, Nike Sport Kit and Application SharingSubmitted by lalit on June 3, 2009 - 4:22pm.
AppleInsider reader Will has discovered code strings in iTunes 8.2 update that was released few days back. The code strings point to radio capabilities as well as Nike Sport Kit support in upcoming iPhone. The above references were not visible in the same files distributed with iTunes 8.1 update. The radio reference in the code is not tied specifically to upcoming iPhone, but it is the most likely candidate, as iPhone will use new Broadcom chip that will support FM radio transmission along with 802.11n WiFi. The code string in iTunes 8.2 shows references to determining station names, frequency and RDS data. With RDS data iPhone will also be able to tag song data to purchase the song from iTunes store later. For Nike+ the code strings shows voice, sync and application update download features. iTunes 8.2 code explicitly mentions Nike+ in relation with iPhone for various purposes. iPhone hasn’t supported the Nike+ feature before, though it is one of the most requested features for the iPhone. The code also shows VoiceOver feature for the iPhone. Apple introduced the VoiceOver technology in the latest iPod shuffle for controlling the play as it comes without screen. It is likely that VoiceOver features in iPhone will be more advanced than iPod shuffle giving users the ability to not just listen to but speak voice commands also. In iPhone software related news, BusinessWeek is reporting that iPhone OS 3.0 will include features, which may let users share software with one another. It is known that P2P connectivity via Bluetooth will be available in iPhone 3.0 software. Initially, it will be used for playing multiplayer games and sharing contact information, but in future a player may be able to invite another to a game when the second person does not yet own a particular app. The invitation would allow sharing/transferring of the app from one person’s iPhone to other person’s iPhone triggering additional purchases. There is no information available whether Apple will allow this or not, but the technology is present in iPhone 3.0 software.
