Asus executives started talking about tablets at least 6 months before iPad was announced in January, but it looks like Asus tablet will come to the market at least six months after iPad shipped in April, according to Asus announcements at Computex 2010. Asus introduced three tablet models including 10-inch Eee Pad EP101TC, 12-inch Eee Pad EP121 and Eee Tablet. Asus Eee Pad EP101TC will be based on Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS and will feature extended cloud and social network integration. It will be just 12.2mm (0.48-inch) thick and weigh 675g (1.48 pounds). The second Asus tablet Eee Pad EP121 will be a Windows 7 Home Premium device with Intel Core 2 Duo CULV processor. The tablet will include USB ports, webcam and SD card slot. Asus has also designed a docking keyboard for EP121 that will give it a more conventional netbook look. Asus plans to ship both Eee Pad EP101TC and EP121 in Q1 2011 priced $399 and $499 respectively.
The third tablet that Asus announced at Computex is the most intriguing one, as it features non-backlit monochrome LCD display. Asus says, with the new Eee Tablet, notepad goes digital, as it is designed to take notes and gives the user the fell of writing on paper with a sensitive 2450 dpi touchscreen. The Eee Tablet will come with built-in notepad templates and support text annotations on books. Eee Tablet is aimed at students and features a 2-megapixel camera that captures detailed images, letting the user grab screenshots of lecture slides and write notes on them instantly. Page turn on the tablet takes 0.1 seconds – nine times faster than e-ink display and it offers 10 hours battery life. Asus Eee Tablet will ship in September 2010 priced less than $300.
MSI also joined the tablet race with WindPad 100 and 110 – both are 10-inch tablets supporting Windows 7 and Android respectively. The WindPad 100 will feature 1.66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB flash storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, optional 3G, HDMI out, and USB port. The tablet will have 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen and weigh just 1.7 pounds. MSI will use their Wind Touch UI over Windows 7 to make it more touch friendly. MSI WindPad 100 will ship by end of this year priced $499.
The second tablet from MSI is WindPad that will be based on NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. The Android 2.1 tablet will also have WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, HDMI and USB port like WindPad 100, but there is no information yet available about storage. MSI plans to ship the WindPad 110 by end of this year with a starting price of $399. We have added videos posted by Engadget of Eee Pad EP121, WindPad 100 and WindPad 110 below.
