Samsung today announced that they are working on a 10-inch display for tablets that will offer pixel density comparable to iPhone’s Retina display. The display will be based on PenTile RGBW (red, green, blue and white pixel) technology and will have 2560 x 1600 resolution at 300ppi (pixels per inch).

The new display will have 300cd/m2 brightness for indoor use and up to 600cd/m2 brightness for outdoor use, while consuming 40% less power than traditional LCD screen. Even though, PenTile RGBW has two subpixels per pixel (either blue/white or red/green) in comparison to three subpixels per pixel (red, green and blue) in traditional LCD, Samsung says that the new display will have as good as, or even better color accuracy than traditional LCD at 72% of the NTSC color gamut.

Samsung will start sampling the new LCD in Q4 2011 and plans to start mass production by end of this year. However, devices based on the new display would only come to the market by mid of 2012, as the new display will require at least quad-core ARM processor and quad-core graphics engine to run smoothly.
