Recently released iPhone OS 4 Beta reveals that next generation iPhone will have high definition video capture capabilities. According to the code in the new SDK, iPhone software can now support higher resolutions video recording in future iPhones. The current iPhone hardware supports 640 x 480 resolution video capture, but the updated hardware should allow 1280 x 720 resolution video capture. The SDK has the following code for video capture:

AVCaptureSessionPreset640x480
AVCaptureSessionPreset1280X720

The above code indicates that Apple is not only planning to bring higher megapixel camera, but also high definition video recording to next gen iPhone. It has been rumored that next gen iPhone will get a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash for better still and video capabilities. There is no concrete information about who the camera module supplier is, but four names including Largan Precision, Genius Electronic, OmniVision and LG Innotek have been making rounds.

Both OmniVision and LG Innotek have 5-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor that could bring vast improvement to iPhone’s imaging capabilities and could easily bring good quality 720p video recording to the iPhone. It is believed that Apple will launch the new iPhone in June at WWDC 2010.
