Details of BlackBerry OS 6.0 Leaked

BGR has posted screenshots and details about the upcoming BlackBerry OS 6.0 that RIM has designed specially for touchscreen devices. RIM has been criticized for their touchscreen UI and BGR points out that the company has changed many features to address those criticisms. The main features of the new BlackBerry OS 6.0 are:

  • New WebKit browser with support for tabs, multitouch and favorites
  • Completely new media player with touch browsing for album art work
  • iPhone like scrolling
  • Cleaner and more modern Inbox with RSS and social networking integration
  • Customizable home screen but no widget support
  • Application management similar to iPhone where you can browse applications by sliding left or right
  • Tap and hold gesture for popup context menu, for example to send email just tap and hold on the composed email to get send option
  • New iPhone like photos application
  • Universal search across the system

BGR says “OS 6.0 looks to be very clean and arguably sexy UI for the BlackBerry platform”. They weren’t show all of the changes to the UI, but overall the new features should add easy of use for touchscreen BlackBerry devices. According to BRG, BlackBerry OS 6.0 will be in market by July this year and RIM would likely announce the new OS at WES 2010 on April 27th.
