Samsung Galaxy S III Rumor Roundup – Quad Core Exynos Processor and Ceramic Body

Since Samsung announced the May 3rd London event, rumors about Galaxy S III that many believe will be launched at the event are spreading like wildfire. Rumors range from external case design to hardware specifications with many expecting some magical numbers. Below are some of the most prominent rumors:

Ceramic Case: Even before the invitations were sent by Samsung, it was rumored that they will use some new material for case design that will differentiate the new flagship handset from rest of the Android crowd. And as soon as the image of Samsung’s London event invitation was posted online this rumor caught fire with many blogs claiming that the new Galaxy S III will have ceramic case in blue and white colors because of the ceramic like droplets in the invitation image. Ceramic is both stronger and lighter, but it is also costlier than plastic used to make most smartphones. However, using ceramic for back panel will definitely differentiate the new handset giving it much richer look and feel.

Full HD Display: BGR was the first to claim that Galaxy S III would have a full HD 1080p display and now few other blogs are also saying the same thing. But from what we have heard from our industry sources the AMOLED display on S III will remain at 720p. Our sources say that not a single display manufacturer including Samsung is making an OLED display measuring 5-inch or less with 1920 x 1080 resolution. If it were LCD display then it would have been more believable as both Toshiba and Sharp are working on a 5-inch screen with 1080p resolution. However, the 4.8-inch display on Galaxy S III will see some substantial improvements as far as image quality is considered because it will be the first handset to feature a true RGB AMOLED display and won’t use the dread PenTile technology to raise the resolution count.

Quad Core Processor: The Galaxy S III will be the first smartphone that will use the new quad core 32nm Exynos processor that will be based on ARM Cortex A9 CPU units. According to The Verge, you can “expect superlative benchmark performance” from the new quad core chip from Samsung. We have also heard that the quad core 1.5GHz Exynos 4412 CPU will smoke every other mobile processor when it comes to raw CPU performance.

8- or 12-Megapixel Camera: The one feature that everyone is debating is the megapixel count on the back camera of Galaxy S III. Some blogs are claiming that it will have 12-megapixel sensor, while others are saying it will be an 8-megapixel sensor. We believe that it will be an 8-megapixel camera because even though 12-megapixel sounds impressive, a sensor that small with that many pixels generates a lot of noise. An 8-megapixel sensor with bigger pixel size will be a better choice for a smartphone camera.

Other Rumors/Specifications: The Android 4.0 based Galaxy S III will have 1GB RAM, 16GB/32GB storage, HD front camera for video chat, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Gizmodo has even posted pictures that they claim are of the upcoming Galaxy S III. The images show a Samsung device with unique oval shape Gorilla Glass front panel with a home button and the backside shows a camera with two LED flashes with Samsung logo.

It will be interesting to see which of these rumors come true when Samsung announces the new device. And if all of the rumors come true than Galaxy S III will be one heck of a smartphone.
