DigiTimes is reporting that OmniVision has received orders for 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor from Apple for next generation iPhone. The company has also received orders for 5-megapixel sensor for another unknown Apple product that will be launched later this year. According to DigiTimes, STMicroelectronics and Aptina were the other two contenders for Apple’s camera orders but they lost the deal to OmniVision.

Many websites are suggesting that Apple might use the 5-megapixel camera in their upcoming tablet like touchscreen device, but we think that if Apple is ordering a 5-megapixel sensor it will be for the phone and not for other device. There are two reasons behind our assumption. No netbook or laptop type device comes with higher megapixel camera, as the camera on these devices mainly functions as webcam. You won’t hold a netbook size device to take picture. The other reason is that our sources have said that Apple is planning to more than double the number of megapixel on next generation top-of-the-line iPhone.

We seriously believe that Apple will introduce two different iPhone models by end of this year and both the cameras will be used on those iPhones.
