Nokia Asks Consumer’s Help to Design New Smartphone ConceptSubmitted by lalit on March 18, 2010 - 2:41pm.
Nokia has launched a new project called “Design by Community” to tap in consumer help for creating a smartphone concept device of the future. On the Design by Community website you can select screen size, screen type, keyboard layout, secondary buttons and screen ratio for your ideal concept device and submit it to Nokia. On the website Nokia says: Between March and May 2010 we want to harness the collective thoughts of the Conversations readership to map out a concept device of the future. This isn't just about creating the next-gen smartphone, we want you to think beyond that. To avoid creating some kind of unwieldy beast, we've created a six-step process where you get to vote for the features and functions you think are most important. Every week we'll tally up the votes and display the defined spec in the Data Sheet below. Every week we'll bring you interviews with Nokia designers, opinions from key bloggers and of course some insight into what goes into creating a product from scratch. Once you've defined the specs you want, we'll get Nokia's design team to turn them into a series of concept sketches, which will go to the public vote. The winner will then be turned into a design concept render and revealed exclusively on Conversations in May. And no, the plan isn't to actually make the product - this is about creating a concept (we can't aim to better the might of the Nokia design team - their knowledge runs far, far deeper than ours). This is an exercise in collaboration sprinkled with some future thinking. More than anything, it's a bit of fun. Want to get involved? Follow the steps below. We have added a video below in which Younghee Jung of Nokia Design Team talks about mobile gesture design. There are other videos also on the Design by Community website covering various aspects of handset design.
