Macotakara is reporting Apple is planning to use aluminum in place of glass to make the back cover of upcoming iPhone 5. The website posted following translation from Chinese newspaper Economic Daily News:

Decision to design similar to iPod touch instead of using glass is supposed that Apple seems to stop problems which are told widely damages from scratching, difficulties of painting white and weight of glass.
Antenna will be designed to penetrate cellular and Wi-Fi waves via resin made Apple logo placed case back, design of iPhone4 using side exposed steel antennas seems to be abandoned.

Our sources said that Apple is definitely looking at other materials for iPhone 5 back casing, but they were not sure if Apple would use aluminum, as it’s not radio transparent. Also the Apple logo on the back of iPhone is very small to put five radio antennas there.

Apple has always pushed the envelope when it comes to iPhone design. We think rather than going back to aluminum, Apple will use new materials like Liquidmetal that have more radio transparency. We know hardware-wise iPhone 5 will be very similar to iPad 2, but the interesting part about the iPhone 5 will be its external design. What materials will Apple use?
