Sony today announced that it has sold 50 million units of Playstation Portable (PSP). The PSP reached the 50 million mark in January at a pace of 12 million units per year of worldwide sales, since it went on sale in November 2004. Out of 50 million units sold more than 11 million PSPs were sold in Japan, which is one of the largest markets for Sony’s handheld gaming console.
PSP sales look pale when compared to Nintendo DS sales of 96 million in the same period of time. DS was also launch in November 2004 along with Sony PSP, but it has been out selling PSP by a ratio of 2:1. And if recent trends were any indication, Nintendo’s lead would only grow with launch of DSi in US.
Sony also announced that more than 200 million games were sold for PSP, bring average number of games sold per PSP unit to 4, which is almost on par with Nintendo’s DS.
