Motorola started environment friendly cellphone race when they announced their new phone made by recycled plastic last month. Well, Samsung has one up them by announcing new Blue Earth handset made by PCM (recycled plastic from water bottles), and it features a solar panel on the back that will charge it enough to make a phone call anytime during the day.
Samsung says the phone is designed to symbolize a flat and well-rounded shiny pebble. The Blue Earth’s touchscreen has an “eco” mode that efficiently adjusts screen brightness, backlit duration and Bluetooth usage to get maximum efficiency. Additionally, it has “eco walk” function that lets the user count their steps with built-in pedometer, calculating how much CO2 emissions have been reduced by walking as opposed to taking the car.
Samsung says that both the phone and the charger are free of harmful chemicals like Brominated flame retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate. The packaging used for the phone is also recycled making Blue Earth one of the greenest phone available. Samsung Blue Earth will be available in UK during second half of 2009. No word on pricing or hardware specifications yet.
