Yesterday, Toshiba announced their new smartphone based on Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD2850 chipset in London. The super slim phone is only 9.9mm (0.38-inch) thick and features a 4.1-inch resistive touchscreen with 800 x 480 resolution. Toshiba says that the screen uses many of the technologies like color matching, dynamic gamma correction and LCD backlight control present in their HDTVs, resulting is more colorful and crisper images.
Other hardware features include 3G HSPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS and microSD card slot with support for up to 32GB cards. There is no information available about onboard memory size, but less than 8GB won’t be good. It is the first smartphone that uses a 1GHz processor, which makes it really fast and ideal for playing high quality video/3D gaming content as you can see in the video below.
On the software side, TG01 is based on Windows Mobile 6.1, which was not designed for touchscreen phones. And, like HTC that uses Touch HD interface to hide that fact, Toshiba uses its own 3D user interface. The 3D interface has three vertical panels that can be swiped through and rotated to select various functions. The end result is not that impressive as you can see in the video below.
Overall, hardware-wise TG01 is really impressive, but we are skeptical about the software. Toshiba will ship TG01 by summer in Europe for unknown price.
