In an interview with Dow Jones, Mark Davis, Program Director for iPhone at Etisalat, has revealed “next version of the iPhone, which is due out in June will be launched in the UAE at the same time”. This news along with iPhone 2,1 code string found in latest iPhone firmware almost confirms that Apple has next generation iPhone ready for summer release. Additionally, Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief has also said at WWDC that Apple will follow the June release cycle for its iPhone updates.
It is also believed that Apple will allow third party apps to run in background when next generation iPhone is released. According to Macrumors, Apple is considering allowing apps to run as user selectable background processes, as Apple has stopped talking about Push notification system, which was Apple’s solution to allow applications to receive notification when they were closed. Macrumors further adds “this feature would likely come in the rumored iPhone 3.0 software update but would be limited to only one or two processes on current hardware. The next generation iPhone, however, would likely see less restricted background process support due to its improved hardware.”
The amount of memory and processing power are the only two things stopping Apple from allowing multiple processes to run in background. In next gen iPhone, Apple will use the latest generation of ARM processor, which would increase processing power and if Apple adds more system memory they can definitely pull this off without changing the software much.
