A $10 laptop with 2GB RAM, WiFi, Ethernet, expandable memory and 2 watts power requirement would be showcased in Tirupati, India on February 3rd. The $10 laptop has been developed by Vellore Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and IIT Madras as an answer to Nicholas Negroponte’s $100 laptop that Indian government rejected two years back.
R P Agarwal, Secretary of Higher Education in India said, “At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down”. Along with the laptop Indian Government will also launch ‘Sakshat’ portal that will provide e-content feed to students. The $10 laptop will ship within six months.
A $10 laptop can definitely make technology more accessible for students in rural areas, improving the overall education system.
