LG Pinning Its Smartphone Hopes on Google Android

LG plans to improve its relatively weak footing in smartphone market by introducing various Google Android based handsets in 2010. LG will unveil about 20 smartphones in 2010 and more than half will be based on Google’s Android operating system. This is a complete change from LG’s last year’s stance when the company announced that Windows Mobile would become the primary operating system for its smartphone lineup.

“The fact that we’ll have bit more Android phones this year doesn’t mean our ties with Microsoft are weakening,” said Skott Ahn, LG’s president and CEO of mobile communications. “Windows Mobile still has legacy issues that makes it challenging to compete in mobiles: we know it and Microsoft knows it.”

Skott also said that LG has no plans to develop its own mobile phone operating system and will focus on building a system where consumers, service operators and software providers can work together effectively on Android platform.

We wrote yesterday that if Windows Mobile 7 is again delayed (which was reported), Microsoft would lose its big smartphone partners like Samsung and LG. And it looks like LG is all set to jump the sinking Windows Mobile ship.
