HTC Smart – The Not So Smartphone

HTC today unveiled HTC Smart, which the company calls smartphone for masses. HTC Smart is based on BREW making it the first phone from the company that isn’t based on smartphone platform. BREW platform is designed for use on feature phones, but the company claims that by integrating HTC Sense user interface they are able to bring unparalleled smartphone experience to the people at more aggressive price point.

The Smart will come with 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera, 300MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 3G HSPA 2100MHz, quad band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth and microSD card slot.

“HTC has always focused on listening to customers and setting the stage for new mobile categories and HTC Smart is the response to customers demand around the world for an easier-to-use, affordable smartphone,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. “Just adding a touch interface doesn’t mean a phone is a smartphone; the integration of HTC Sense brings an unparalleled smartphone experience for people looking to do more on their phone.”

Basically, HTC is entering the feature phone market (without accepting that they are), because just by adding new UI over feature phone software like Brew doesn’t make it a smartphone. The HTC Smart will be available this spring across Europe and Asia.
